Mission

The Science Committee strives to encourage high quality research on sexual orientation and transgender issues. Research has played a critical role in shedding light on significant public policy issues, such as depathologization of homosexuality and legalization of child adoption for same-sex couples. Just as important, empirical studies have contributed basic knowledge in areas such as sexuality, gender, and stigma. The Science Committee aims to advance production and visibility of outstanding research by:

  • Providing resources for students and both new and experienced researchers
  • Playing a role in research-related programming and awards at the APA Convention
  • Facilitating connections among individuals who conduct sexual orientation and transgender research
  • Stimulating dialogue about issues germane to sexual orientation and transgender research, including substantive, methodological, and political issues

The Science Committee projects fall within three main categories:

  • Creating or supporting resources for LGBT-related research.
  • Involvement in science-related programming at the APA Convention.
  • Supporting the research-related awards given through the Division.

Recent Activities

We have assembled a list of links to website of scientific interest that may be useful to Division 44 members.

We have made significant progress in our effort to create an online database of Division 44 researcher. We developed an online survey and sent an invitation to complet ethe survey to every member with an email address listed in the directory. We are now working with a technical support person to transform our information into a database that can be posted to the website.

As a way of showcasing the research talent in the division, we are planning to to short write-ups about individuals who do LGBT-related research for the Division Newsletter.

Science committee members were instrumental in the creation of GASP (the GLBT Alliance in Social and Personality Psychology). Co-sponsored by Division 44, GASP received an interdivisional grant from APA to support the development of an annotated web-based database of measures designed for LGBT populations and issues. The GASP Measures Database is now online and we strongly encourage you to explore and use it! The database provides "one-stop shopping," where researchers can search for measures related to a variety of different topics, obtain information about their psychometric properties, find relevant citations, obtain the email address of the measure's author, and even download some measures and coding instructions right away.
