Committee on Transgender & Gender Variance Issues
Chairs
Lore Dickey and Shana Hamilton
Mission
In recognition of the obstacles and barriers faced by transgender persons which includes a wide range of gender identities because of discrimination and lack of understanding, the Committee on Gender Transgender & Gender Variance Issues explores how the psychological profession and Division 44 might best meet the needs of transgender individuals and the transgender community through advocacy, scientific research, and professional training and education.
Recent Activities
Chaired by Marg Schneider, APA’s six member Task Force on Gender Identity, Gender Variance, and Intersex Conditions is hard at work gathering data and developing its recommendations. Members of the Division 44 Committee were instrumental in this process and are serving on the APA Task Force.
The Committee routinely encourages and organizes submissions to the APA Convention programming.
It has also facilitated submissions to the Summer 2004 and Summer 2005 special issues of the Division 44 newsletter, which have focused on Transgender concerns.
